National Public Works Week is from May 18th to 24th

The objective of National Public Works Week is to honor the services of the heroes who live among us. Public works are an indispensable part of any developed society.

This year’s theme, “People, Purpose, Presence,” highlights three cornerstone ideals that motivate public works professionals to serve in their communities every day.

Meeting the needs of people is what gives public works its sense of purpose. Many times, public works professionals will never meet those whose lives have been impacted because when things are going right, no one knows that public works is there. Yet, with or without fanfare, public works is ever present, working in the background to advance quality of life for all.

Communities may not take much notice of the dedication of public works professionals because they just quietly do their jobs without fanfare. Yet, public works is always there, working behind the scenes to advance quality of life for all.

Public works professionals make our daily lives function in fundamental ways that we don't always recognize or appreciate. They provide infrastructure and services in transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, cemeteries and rights-of-way management. Our communities are dynamic places to live and work because public works is ever present.

They often work through long stretches of shifts and are always on call for emergencies or to keep the roads clear and safe.

Thank a public worker when you see them during National Public Works Week, and everyday!
