Location

The Municipality of Calvin is located in the District of Nipissing. It is nestled south of the Mattawa River along Highway 17 and just north of Ontario’s world famous Algonquin Park. Calvin’s land area measures 139.17 km2 or 14,325 hectares. Driving distances encompass 10 minutes from the town of Mattawa, 40 minutes from the city of North Bay, and 4 hours west and north of Ottawa and Toronto.

Special Features

The area offers Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, the Canadian Ecology Centre, the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area, and the Voyageur Multi-Use Trail System.

 The Municipality of Calvin has a population of 542 and 280 households. (StatsCan 2013)

Services

Properties in the Municipality of Calvin are serviced by private water wells and individual septic systems. Utilities are supplied by Hydro One, and Bell Canada. Union Gas and TransCanada Pipeline have a corridor through the township.

Fire Protection

The Municipality of Calvin Volunteer Fire Department, established in 1976, has one station located on the corner of Hwy 630 and Peddlers Drive, which houses 4 emergency vehicles (1 pumper truck, 2 tanker/pumper trucks, 1 rescue van). The department’s complement of 17 includes a Chief, Deputy Chief, 2 Captains, 2 Lieutenants and 11 firefighters.

Communication Towers

There are two towers in Calvin. One is located at the Calvin landfill on Adams Road, and the second one is located at the junction of Hwy 11 & 630 on the north side. High-speed, satellite and dial-up internet connections are also available through various providers.

Hospitals

Mattawa General Hospital

The Mattawa General Hospital is home to a full service 19 bed acute community hospital and is working towards integrating with a 73 bed Nursing Home. It offers an extensive range of speciality and outpatient services such as Physiotherapy, Paedeatrics, Urology, Psychiatry, Women’s Clinic, Diabetic Resource Clinic and Mental Health Services.

North Bay Regional Health Centre

NBRHC has 401 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.

A major teaching centre for students in medicine, psychiatry, nursing and allied health professions, NBRHC is proud to be affiliated with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Nipissing University, Canadore College and several other Ontario colleges and universities.
